Pramati announces Dekoh, a new desktop platform for applications that can deliver integrated experience of web and desktop out-of-the-box the platform provides web 2.0 features like tagging, sharing and commenting features. Soon to follow the release will be Dekoh personal media applications.

Pramati Technologies today announces its plan to launch Dekoh a new platform for applications that bring an integrated experience of the web and the desktop.

So far Desktop applications and web applications were built and deployed as silos. Desktop applications are usually written OS specific and offer richer user interface. Web applications are accessed through web browsers. They require Internet connectivity and user data uploaded or saved on websites. Collaborating and sharing data is easy in web applications.

Dekoh brings the unique benefits of desktop and web together. Dekoh platform consists of Dekoh Desktop and Dekoh Network.

Dekoh Desktop is a small footprint download that can be installed on user’s desktop in a single click. Dekoh Desktop includes a web server on which applications written using open standards like JSP, Ajax, DHTML, Flash can be deployed and accessed thru a web browser. Applications deployed on Dekoh Desktop are automatically enabled for web 2.0 functions like tagging, sharing, commenting, rating, etc.

Dekoh Network allows controlled sharing of applications or content on the web. A user can share application/content on his or her desktop with a buddy, who can go to userID.dekoh.net and access it. The key thing to note is that the user is not required to upload different kind of content to different websites. Instead, the shared content and applications remain on the desktop and are served from there.

Jay Pullur, CEO of Pramati says, “Dekoh bridges the big divide between Desktop and the Web. Using browser-based applications seamlessly when offline or online is a compelling value. Writing desktop applications using the same web standards like Java™, AJAX, DHTML, Flash, and PHP is exciting for developers”.

Initial release of Dekoh will include the platform and media applications for Photos and Music. An alpha release of Dekoh is expected in a few weeks. A public beta is expected in April of this year. Dekoh software will be free and open sourced. It will available at http://www.dekoh.com.

It seems like, this platform will bridge the gap between Home content and Internet content.
Is it going to be only for the media files or any kind of content we can share?
Can user add content from internet to the home PC?
    Great Job!!

Saket: We are working on a few applications including one that will help you bookmark as well as add content from internet. But the initial apps that will come out are media sharing ones. BTW, it is extremely simple to build your own app. An application can be as simple as a plain HTML that you save in a particular folder and you can share that page with buddies!

How is this different from ‘orb’?
Apart from the open source part?

I am not sure what we are trying to solve. Solve the problem of content creator uploading into a lot of sites?
If this is the case, the solution provided has moved the problem to the end user as the user(or viewer) who is not guaranteed of availability of the services - because it is afterall a desktop.
Now we are moving the end user to come to the dekoh portal rather than a flickr or a yahoo photo. Am I missing something here?
I see a statement that there are a lot of use of this platform for enterprise use - can you name some examples?

When i heard about this idea (somewhere in the newspapers) i was like its such a brilliant idea and its gonna revolutionize the internet.
But when i browsed through the website, installed it , i found something very complex about it all. Contrary to companies like Google and Apple who present complex ideas in a very user friendly way and any newbie can start using those products right away. I think this products need to be revamped a little to make it jargons free and much more intuitive.
I was going through Dekoh FAQ. This is what i see.
    What is Dekoh?
    Dekoh consists of 3 components:
    A. Dekoh Desktop: Rich Internet Application platform for the desktop.
    B. Dekoh Network: Enables secure sharing of Dekoh Desktop applications and content on the web. Viewers don’t need to install Dekoh software.
    C. Dekoh Applications: Dekoh ships applications that run on Dekoh Desktop.
Now these jargons are very off putting unless you are a techie. I use google search engine and i do not bother which technology they use, which algo do they use. They say it is a search engine which makes more sense to me than something like “an Internet application platform created to search through all the ISPs in the world and according to their relevancy delivered to your desktop in that order”..
